Hit the road with a hire car to see what villages you can explore. Whether you plan your route in advance or want to just drive and see where the road takes you, there are plenty of places just waiting to be uncovered. Get off the beaten track to some of the hidden beaches and enjoy more remote locations including the Vassilikos Peninsula to leave the urban lifestyle behind you. Wind your way through the scented pine forests of Mount Skopos, making stops to admire the scenery and wildlife. Migratory birds come from as far afield as Africa to rest on the island during the spring and autumn months providing a magnificent spectacle.

If you want to get out and about on foot, the walk to Argassi is just a short distance from Zante town along a beautiful coastal route, allowing time for you to experience the beach, shops and lively bars and restaurants. Zante itself is a pretty place for a gentle stroll where you can venture from the cathedral in the centre up towards the castle – the views are simply breathtaking and the castle has a history dating back as far as 1480. Or for something a little more strenuous, in the middle of the island you can take a hike to the village of Gyri, sitting at 550 metres above sea level. Stunning mountain scenery combines with an array of wildlife species, making this a real escape, while a local taverna serves up traditional cuisine for a well-earned reward after your efforts.
Relaxing boat trips allow you to really enjoy refreshing breezes straight from the sea. Catch a boat from Tsilivi harbour to the Blue Caves and Smugglers Cove. The caves were discovered in 1897 and they display a spectrum of blues, reflecting onto the white rocks from the surrounding waters. Even the marine life appears blue, an amazing natural wonder. Smugglers Cove is one of the most famed sights on Zante where the beautiful beach is simply paradise.
Local wildlife such as the caretta (loggerhead turtle), can be witnessed if you climb on board a vessel from the town of Kalamaki. Protected so that nobody can disturb their eggs on the beach during the night, these are surprisingly large creatures and you have a wonderful opportunity to see how they behave in their natural habitat.

No matter how you get around on Zante, you will be sure to see some of the island gems on offer.
