Opening date and chef revealed for Birch Selsdon site
New details have been revealed about Birch Selsdon, including a projected opening date and the name of the Michelin star chef heading up the hotel’s restaurants.
Birch Selsdon will comprise 177 bedrooms, a lido, a wellness space, three bars, a co-working hub, family wing and kids club, activity studios and several communal spaces from snugs to the Orangerie.
The hotel will also be home to two restaurants under the culinary direction of Michelin starred chef Lee Westcott, who will use produce from Selsdon’s own grounds to create his seasonal, farm-to-fork menus.
Real estate investment company Aprirose announced last summer that the historic Selsdon Park Hotel in Croydon was to become the second location for lifestyle hotel concept Birch.
The hotel is a joint venture between Aprirose and Birch Hospitality Ltd following the success of the first site in Hertfordshire.
The site was most recently home to the De Vere Selsdon Estate.
At the time of purchase, the 200-acre parkland estate incorporated a 150-room hotel, set within a 17th century traditional brick mansion, with meeting and conference facilities, a range of dining amenities, a leisure centre, tennis courts, running trail, and a recently closed golf course.
The Selsdon Park Hotel and grounds are now undergoing a significant renovation, which Birch says will follow its philosophy of ‘working with the existing building and the attributes of the site, enhancing and improving them through thoughtful interventions with strong links to nature and the external landscape.’
The concept has been creatively led by co-founder Chris King and the Birch team with Adam Mursal of Pillar Consulting acting as Development Manager, as he did with the first Birch location.
Manish Gudka, CEO of Aprirose, commented: “Hospitality and hotels continues to be an important mainstay of our real estate portfolio, partnering with several high-profile brands such as Delta Hotels by Marriott, Double Tree by Hilton and the Qhotels portfolio.
“Aprirose is proud to have backed the first Birch, which was subsequently named as Sunday Times Hotel of the Year in 2020. We look forward to the launch of the second Birch next year, as well as subsequent openings in the coming years.”
The hotel is located in South Croydon, on the fringes of the Surrey countryside, a mile from Selsdon Wood Nature Reserve and 25 minutes from Clapham Junction.
The food and beverage at the first Birch location is overseen by Chef Robin Gill, best known for his London restaurants The Dairy and Sorella.
