Want to Become a Digital Nomad? Here are 4 Things You Have to Know First
Being able to travel the world and earn a living simultaneously may seem like a dream to many, and it is in many ways. Having this kind of freedom can be great, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. Maybe it’s your first time living abroad for a long time. You’ll soon realize that it’s very different to visit a country than it is to live in it. There are also plenty of other things you may have overlooked that could come back to bite you later. Let’s take a look at a few things you should know before becoming a digital nomad.
Things to Know Before You Become a Digital Nomad
Money May be Hard to Come By
Hopefully, you have a plan, cash reserves, and a budget for your trip. You still have to know that emergencies can happen, and you have to be ready for a plan B. This is why you should always have a few friends back home that you can call if things get bad. One example is if you’re a victim of theft. This can go from something minor to having your whole apartment stripped, so you have to be ready for these events. In some cases, you may not even have access to an ATM or credit card. So, you need to look at services that allow people to send money abroad and learn how they work before moving.
You Might Not be Able to Work Right Away
You also shouldn’t underestimate the time it could take to get things going. You might have to wait for certain documentation to be able to work lawfully in the country. This is why you need to account for at least two months of living expenses before moving anywhere to make sure you’ll have something to fall back on.
Don’t Expect Wi-Fi or Electricity
One thing you might realize fast when moving to another country is that things like electricity cannot be taken for granted. In many countries, you will have to deal with shortages, and these can be almost daily depending on where you are. So, you may want to find somewhere that will offer alternative support, like a generator. You also can’t expect to have access to Wi-Fi everywhere, so we suggest you check your mobile network and see if it will cover the area where you’ll be. You might also want to look at some of the wireless hotspots that you can find either on location or online.
Travel Disruptions
We’ve now realized how quickly things can change and you never know when flights in and out of a country may be canceled. You will have to deal with this uncertainty and the possibility of staying in a foreign country for longer than you are prepared for.
These are all things that digital nomads need to be prepared for. Don’t fall for the picture-perfect images of what it’s like; instead, make sure you know what to expect.
